Q&A: Converting Images for Printing

By J.D. BIERSDORFER

In Adobe Photoshop Elements, how do you save files as CMYK for printing?

Adobe Photoshop Elements, the edition of its Adobe Photoshop image-editing software for home users, does not include the option to convert and save a file in the CMYK mode.

CMYK is short for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key, or blacK; it refers to the standard in colors used in the “process” or “four-color” method of commercial printing. Photos from digital cameras and pictures used on Web pages are typically in the RGB (Red Green Blue) mode, the same colors used by computer monitors and television sets.

Adobe's Web site states that, “Though Photoshop Elements does not support CMYK color mode, most desktop printers automatically convert to it.” If you need to convert your files anyway, look for a third-party RGB to CMYK conversion program or site; some advanced techniques involving the program's filters might also work. Because c onverting between modes can affect the overall look of the image, you may want to have a professional printer or pre-press shop handle that part of the job for you.
