Brother\'s All-in-One Printer Is a Small Idea

Realistically, most people have to take work home with them now and then. That means having at least a minimal amount of business equipment in the home. But you don't want your job taking over your life - nor do you want your business machines taking over your house.

That may make the new Brother Business Smart series printer, the MFC-J4510DW, a welcome addition. It claims to be the world's smallest-depth all-in-one printer, copier and fax machine. The machine is 7.3 inches tall, 11.4 inches deep and 18.9 inches wide, weighing in at 20.5 pounds.

Brother has packed a lot into the machine by redesigning the internal workings of the typical printer and streamlining the ink cartridges. Despite the cartridges' compact size, Br other said to expect to get 600 pages before one runs out.

The machine's inkjet nozzle is also double the typical size for faster printing at 6,000 by 1,200 dots-per-inch resolution. Test prints were very good, although I wish I'd had some photo-quality paper for a more stringent test. It does support PictBridge printing directly from cameras that have it.

Setup was made somewhat easier by using its built-in 3.7-inch touchscreen with a setup wizard. I still had to download drivers from the Web, because the ones that came on a disk with the printer were already out of date.

The printer-copier-fax lists for $200, but of course the real cost is in replacement ink. I found cartridges online at $42 for a package of the three colored inks and $30 for a black ink cartridge. There are also “Super High Yield” cartridges that promise more copies but are more expensive.
