Q&A: Downloading iTunes Purchases Automatically - or Not

By J.D. BIERSDORFER

I updated the software on my iPod Touch when iOS 6 came out and now all the music I buy on the computer also downloads to the iPod - which is running out of room quickly. How can I turn this off?

Apple has an Automatic Downloads setting built into the software for its iTunes Store. While the feature is designed to make sure the music, apps and books you buy in one place are also delivered to your other computers and iOS devices, you can turn it off.

On the iPod Touch's Home screen, tap the Settings button, flick down the screen and tap the iTunes & App Stores line. On the next screen, next to Music, tap the On button to Off. On this same screen, you can turn off automatic downloads for Apps and Books as well. Press the iPod's Home button to return to the Home screen.

If you have other computers that use the same Apple ID account for purchases and you want to enable or disable the Automatic Downloads feature on something with a bigger drive, you can make the adjustment in the iTunes preferences. In iTunes for Windows, go to the Edit menu and choose Preferences; on a Mac, go to the iTunes menu and choose Preferences.

In the Preferences box, click the Store tab and under Automatic Downloads, check (or uncheck) the boxes for Music, Apps and Books. Click the OK button when finished.
