Q&A: Saving Laptop Battery Power

By J.D. BIERSDORFER

Which uses less battery power on a Windows laptop, sleep or hibernate mode?

The Sleep and the Hibernate modes built into the Windows operating system are both power-saving states designed to conserve the battery when you are not actively using the computer, but they differ a bit. Of the two, hibernation mode uses less juice.

Hibernation mode is meant to be used for longer stretches of inactivity than is sleep mode. When you put the laptop to sleep, the system stores open files and settings into the computer's memory, which needs a small bit of battery power to maintain. Hibernation mode, on the other hand, stores the open files on the hard drive and turns off the computer.
