Tip of the Week: Customizing iOS Notifications

By J.D. BIERSDORFER

Thanks to the Notifications settings, you can have an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch get your attention when you have a calendar appointment, new e-mail messages or alerts from other apps. In iOS 5 and later, you can collect all the alerts from different apps in one place by dragging your finger down from the top of the screen to reveal the Notification Center screen.

To make specific apps appear in the Notification Center, go to the Home screen, tap the Settings icon and tap Notifications in the list. The right side of the screen shows a list of apps already in the Notification Center. To add more apps, flick down the screen to the Not In Notification Center list and tap the name of an app you want to add.

On the next screen, tap the On button next to Notification Center. Here, you can also adjust the look of the messages displayed, choose to have an audio alert or to have the alert pop up on the device's lock screen. Apple has more on using iOS notifications here.
